Writing Your First E-Book - It\’s Easier Than You Think
Electronic books or e-books are rapidly becoming the most popular method of distributing information in the publishing world. At a time when the Internet is flooded with information about every topic imaginable, e-books allow people to quickly obtain specific information about a subject quickly and inexpensively.
The most popular e-books are informational e-books, or how-to e-books. This type of book is easy to write and does not require a huge commitment of time. People who purchase e-books are not expecting to get a 300 page monster with tons of background information. They primarily are expecting a book with just the information that they need to solve a problem or teach them a specific skill. E-books like this can range from ten pages up to maybe 100 pages although most fall in the lower range.
The easiest way to get started, is to write about something you already know a little about. For instance, using a program such as Paintshop Pro, or Excel, or maybe a skill like wielding, all qualify as suitable topics for an e-book.
Before you begin a writing, a little pre-planning is needed. Obviously an e-book covering all aspects of Excel is too ambitious. Instead of writing a general how-to book, focus on one small application. In the case of excel it could be something like setting up a spreadsheet to calculate mortgage payments or analyzing stocks. Narrowing the focus of your e-book actually makes it easier to market it, as you can focus on a smaller group of users who may be looking for just the type of help you are offering.
