Why Everyone Should be Looking for Lost Money
If you were one of the millions of kids whose parents opened up a savings account for them when they were young, you're fortunate. It's a great way to put a bit of money away for a child's future. Unfortunately, many of those children who had such generous and thoughtful parents didn't keep track of that account once they became adults. The money may actually be still sitting somewhere waiting for the account holder to claim it. This is just one of the reasons everyone should be looking for lost money in their name.
In addition to forgotten, dormant bank accounts, there are many instances when money becomes misplaced. Another common example of missing assets is those found in safety deposit boxes. Typically when a person moves they'll go to the bank and retrieve everything out of their safety deposit box. If they don't, the stock certificates, bonds and jewelry will eventually be sent to the state government for safe keeping. If you are looking for lost money carefully think back in time to whether you left behind a small treasure in a safety deposit box. Also, if you've ever lost a loved one, perhaps they had a safety deposit box you weren't aware of. It's worth doing a bit of detective work to find that out.
Death is a part of life, and many people go the extra step of taking out a life insurance policy. These policies are meant to be paid to the beneficiary once the owner of the policy passes away. It's surprising how many people die without mentioning they had a policy. Since the beneficiary never makes a claim, the policy sits unpaid. If you have been close to someone who has died and you suspect they may have had a life insurance policy payable to you, it's worth looking for lost money that applies to insurance proceeds. You may be surprised to find out you've been missing out on a sizable payment.
There are many other examples of lost money including rental security deposits and checks that have never been cashed. You may have worked for a company for a short period of time and left abruptly. Even if you thought you weren't entitled to a paycheck, you likely were. Although you may think looking for lost money like this isn't worth the trouble, it is. Any extra cash in your pocket is always an advantage.
With all the available tools and resources on the Internet, it's easy when you're looking for lost money to discover whether you are one of the lucky ones who does have cash coming to them. You may be surprised to learn that you've been left money by a relative you didn't know you had or that you've missed out on an income tax refund because you moved.
Everyone should take a few minutes to research their name and former addresses to see how much money they are owed. Just imagine what you can do with the extra money that you didn't know belonged to you.
