Before I buy a product online, I almost always read online reviews to influence my decision. Two of the biggest places to find reviews are Amazon and Circuit City. I usually read their reviews and reviews from specialty sites like Audio Review.

I personally love shopping at Amazon as I find almost everything I\'m looking for at discount Prices as well as used products at reduced prices without the nonsense I deal with on occasion at eBay. However, I do not find the reviews on Amazon, very helpful at all. I admit I\'m generalizing here, but for every good review on Amazon that is helpful in making a decision, there are a bunch that are moronic and give you a headache trying the read their other reviews. Here\'s a hypothetical example: \"Such and such TV has an excellent picture but the set is too heavy and therefore I\'m not rating it high.\" This is total stupidity. Usually people have TV sets delivered so the weight doesn\'t make a difference. In addition, the weight of the product is known in advance. Then you get the \"It didn\'t work right when I didn\'t connect it right or some variation on that.\"

The worst thing on Amazon is asking other people to rate the helpfulness of the review. This is a great idea but the problem is, Amazon does not do a good job exactly explaining what exactly \"helpful\" means. The end result is, if a person criticizes a product and explains his criticism, a lot of the time people will say the review wasn\'t helpful, as they are assuming that helpful means helping them decide to buy the product, instead of meaning helpful for them to decide whether on not to buy the product.

In regards to Circuit City, I need to clarify that this is about their online reviews only. Circuit City use to be my favorite store as I appreciated their sales help who knew the Stores products and were very helpful and I liked their products and prices but now I try to avoid their stores as much as possible because I don\'t approve of what they did to their long term employees from what I can understand.

Anyway, I find Circuit City Reviews very helpful. While they obviously do not have anything close to the amount of products Amazon does, they seem to have a lot more perceptive reviews by more people reviewing their products and I find the overall review rating a lot more helpful then Amazon. Basically if you have 25 people reviewing a product instead of say 5 for example, you\'re going to get a more accurate picture of a product. Also the ratings are usually based on more then 1 factor that I find more helpful. For TV they have separate ratings for picture quality, features and cost.

As a general rule, if a majority of online reviews (from different sources) praise a product and give it a high rating, I buy the product. If a substantial minority of online reviews find fault with a product, I don\'t but the product.
