Television Production - Lesson Twenty, Your Choices, Your Life
You would be surprised how much choices affect your life and your television programs. Making a choice is a simple action. Everyone needs to realize that the choices, even the most microscopic choices, affect our lives and our shows tremendously. When you wake up in the morning you have the option to go out into the world obliviously, or you can wake up, listen to the news and find out what is happening in your own community and then you are totally prepared for a very different day. Listening to the news (not the gory news but the informative news) can make or break the day.
Be Informed:
For example, if you live in a very large, bustling city, you can tell the weather and the surrounding events that might change your day. If you live in New York City, you can listen to the news and find out who is going to be in town. On a day that the President is coming to NYC, you are always best to leave the car at home and travel by bus, train or by walking to your destination. That one fact, whether the President will be in town or not, can change your travel arrangements and it can add or take away hours of needless travel. Usually on the President\'s day in NYC, there is universal gridlock. Traffic comes to a stand-still because traffic patterns will be re-arranged, streets will be closed or cars will travel at a rate of less than half the usual rate in that city. Listening to the weather can mean the difference between you arriving at work in a soaked suit or arriving at work looking like the professional that you are. So, begin correctly, by being informed about what is happening around you or by being informed about what might happen. No news service or weather service is perfect or foolproof but you can at least get an idea of what might happen.
So, even those simple choices about whether to bring an umbrella or not can change your entire day. So for the purposes of this article, I am going to talk about the choices that you make when volunteering on other producer\'s shows.
Choices:
- You can choose to be wide open and work on anyone\'s show, without even inquiring what the show is about. That gives you opportunities for more shows, more times and more days,
- You can choose to be picky about your volunteering. This is a good choice since whatever you volunteer for, can and will affect your reputation as a producer in the community.
- You can choose to throw away your power and let others choose for you. (This is not a good choice; you will suffer and probably other producers will suffer when the results come in).
- You can choose to work for particular producers or choose not to work for particular producers. After you are at community access for a while you probably will learn of everyone\'s professional or non-professional reputations and you might think that you have enough information to go on. Stop. In your community, instead of listening to gossip or instead of listening to reputations, observe and learn for yourself. Yes, it is okay and it is a good idea to ask other people\'s opinions but use this only for background information. Then take the opportunity to work with or to learn about the particular producer yourself and make your own judgments about whom you want to work with. Always make your own choices.
- You can set standards for yourself and use your own moral code or your own judgment about your own participation to guide you in choosing shows to work on. (And, prayer helps. It is always best to get guidance from God before making any important decisions in your life. And, deciding which shows to work on and deciding which producers to work for surely are important and these choices will make an enormous difference in your life. \r
Choose Topics:
So, what are the matters do and will affect your show and your choices? In the community access programming, you will see many varieties of shows. You will find religious, sports, community news, parades, celebrations, nature and more. You can begin by choosing which topics that you would like to work around. For example, you can choose to work on only sports shows or spiritual shows. That does limit your volunteering but it also gives you great options. You will learn a lot about either of the topics and you will become specialized. Sometimes specialization pays off.
Choose High Standards and Cleanliness:
I can only suggest these as a beginning. Begin your career in community access or in any other television area, by volunteering and working for those shows that offer the consumer a positive perspective on life. Help on those shows that will bring people up, not put people down. By doing this, you lift your whole spirit and you present a serious approach to the community access television production process. After all, why would you want to put people down? There are some shows that make fun of people, and there are other shows that promote pornography, hate and violence. Are these the things that you want to be connected with? If not, then fully inquire - before - you agree to work on anyone\'s show. Keep your standards high and work with those other producers who keep their own standards high. Doing these things will make you happy. Yes it is hard work, but you will be glad you made those choices for yourself. If you can help it at all, never work on shows that humiliate people, disrespect people, for that will not bring good things into your life. Of course you will make your own decisions in this area, and this article is an article containing information and ideas that will help you make your own decisions. My motto is keep it clean. That works for me.
Are You Choosing Humiliation?
Yes, you have other choices too. For yourself, you might decide that you want to help out on those other shows (the ones that humiliate people and put people down). Still if this is your choice that is your choice. If you choose that direction, I suggest only one thing, be careful. You might notice, after a while, when working on those shows that you are bringing other things into your life that you do not wish to have. You might notice that those put-downs and those humiliating remarks or actions are working their way into your personal life. After all, they do say that you can take your work home with you. So, if after working on those shows that put people down or humiliate people, if you notice that you begin doing the same to people in real life, then you are bringing your work home with you and you are making television affect you in ways that you ordinarily would not let television affect you. It is no different than when children watch too much violence, their minds are affected by what they see. A child who sees a murder on television for the first time will have a different reaction to seeing a murder on the thousandth time that they see a murder.
The same with you and your volunteering on shows. The first time you work on a show that humiliates people, you will have one reaction, but work on that same show for weeks, months or years, and that should will change you -probably for the worst- in your personal life. Everyone is affected by what they see, hear and take into their brains. So, make your own choices but know that your choices will affect your entire life, eventually. It is like positive thinking affects people. So does negative thinking. Remember the book, The Secret? If you read that book you will learn that you bring into your life what you choose to bring in. And you bring it in by your choices that you make every day. So for the purposes of good change and healthy living, I suggest that you work on shows that bring people\'s spirits up. Lift someone up instead of bringing them down. That is the key to life and usually that is the key to good television production.
After all, look at the networks, would you rather be a guest on the Oprah show or would you rather be a guest on the Jerry Springer show? Which shows and which audiences demand more respect? What do you want your reputation to be? It is all in your choices. Do you want to be on a show where the host and guests lift people\'s spirits or do you want to be on a show where the host and guests come in like clowns and act like fools? Yes, there is a place for comedy in our world, but the comedy that is refreshing, the comedy that is able to bring people up and lift their spirits without tearing human beings down and without humiliating people, that is the good lasting comedy. So even if you wish to work on a humorous show, set your own standards and work on those humorous shows that respect human life and human beings. If you find yourself working on a show that brings human beings down, ask yourself, do you really want to do this or are you doing it just because you are people-pleasing? Ask yourself is your volunteer work in tune with your own spiritual and moral values, or are you compromising your values because others want you to do so. Those are questions that you need to ask yourself. Once you know the answers to these questions, you will have half the battle won, and you are on the road to success as you would have it. Above all, remember take actions that are your choices, not actions that others want you to take.
So make great choices for you television production volunteering and you will see great positive effects on your life. The choice that you make today is the choice that you are making for your life. Your life is important, so make those informed choices that will bring beauty, education, information and joy into your life.
Your choices matter! Make good and healthy choices in your life and in your work.
