Small Business Automobile Insurance - Are You Risking Your Business By Neglecting it?

Many of us run our small or home businesses, while using our personal insurance. This is especially true of car liability. If you run a home business, or a small business in an office, and you use your car for business, you could be taking a big risk. You need to check your policy or speak with your insurance agent. They will probably want to know the percentage of time that you use your car for a work related errand, versus the amount of time your car is used to run personal errands. Driving to and from your normal place of work is usually considered personal use. However, driving to a client's site or a sales appointment can be very different. The point is, you do not want to sort all this out after you have an accident. Even if you think you are within your insurance policy's limits, check with a qualified insurance agent.

However, the comments above apply to a business owner using their own car. Do you lend your car to employees so they can run business errands? Do you expect them to use their own cars to make business trips? Now the matter gets more complicated. If you expect your personal insurance company to cover your employees while they use your car to conduct company business, you may be unpleasantly surprised if an accident occurs, especially if your employee should be judged at fault. An even worse problem could arise if your employee has an accident in their own car. Now who is liable. If you expect the employee's personal auto insurance to cover the accident while they are conducting business for your company, you may be expecting too much. Do you also expect your employee to pay deductibles or rent another car out of their own pocket?

Even if the accident is not your fault, or the fault of your employee, you will have some inconvenience and lost time. Accidents seem to cost everybody money. Furthermore, an adjuster may want to total the car at far less than the replacement value. Can you, or your employee, afford to make up the difference?

Accidents can be serious. Property damage can run up into the thousands and tens of thousands of dollars for minor accidents. If anybody is injured in the accident, consider potential damage to run into the tens of thousands of dollars or more. Can your small business afford a potential liability like that? Carefully consider the answer to that question. If you cannot afford a large lawsuit, than a commercial car insurance premiums will be a bargain.

Commercial car insurance is very similar to personal coverage. Sometimes you can even add a rider onto your personal policy to cover your company for business use. Any car insurance agent should be able to tell you the limits of your personal policy, and what you need to do. You may even be able to get your employees to add that rider on their own coverage. But what you should not do, is to ignore the risk.
