How to Compare Low Cost Automobile Insurance in New Hampshire

New Hampshire is one of just a small handful of states, most on the east coast, which does not require all of its citizens to purchase automobile insurance in order to drive on public roadways within the state.

However, this doesnt mean that just because you are a New Hampshire resident that you dont have to purchase automobile insurance. There are several reasons you might be required to purchase automobile insurance even if you do live in New Hampshire.

First of all, New Hampshire only extends the courtesy of driving without automobile insurance to drivers which have earned the privilege. You earn that privilege by driving legally and safely at all times.

Any New Hampshire resident who has been convicted of a DUI (Driving Under the Influence) or of a DWI (Driving While Intoxicated) will not be getting a free ride from the state. A first conviction will result in a driver being required to purchase automobile insurance for a minimum of 3 years a second conviction bumps it up to 5 years.

In addition, New Hampshire has devised a system of points which drivers can earn for bad driving. Accumulate too many points and you, too, will be required to purchase auto insurance. The precise number of points needed to trigger your need to purchase automobile insurance is based on age.

Negative points can be earned for such things as speeding or reckless driving, running a stop sign, driving on a sidewalk, failure to obey the orders of a police officer and so forth.

So assuming that you do have to purchase automobile insurance in New Hampshire, is there anything you can do to reduce your monthly premium payment?

The most important thing you can do is to keep a perfect driving record. Any blemish on your record, from a DUI to speeding can and usually does increase the amount of your premium.

Drivers 25 and under should stay in school if possible and earn good grades. Students with a B or better grade point average can qualify for a Good Student Discount on their automobile insurance.

Older drivers, those 55 and older, can often earn a substantial discount by passing a special drivers refresher course offered by many insurance companies. Talk to your agent and see if your insurance company participates in this program.

Older cars, especially cars with little Kelly Blue Book value should not be insured for collision or comprehensive since in all likelihood your insurance company will not pay off on such insurance even if you pay for it.

Your deductible can affect how much you pay each month. The larger your deductible in other words, the more you are willing to pay out of your own pocket for an accident or other claim the less your insurance company is going to charge you.

Now its time to get online. There are literally dozens of websites that allow you to compare automobile insurance policies side-by-side. Take the time to fill out the form on at least 3 such sites. By making comparisons on 3 different sites you stand a better chance of comparing all of the different insurance companies operating in New Hampshire, and that gives you the best chance to compare low cost automobile insurance in New Hampshire and feel confident that you have, indeed, found the very best and most affordable policy available.
