Bearing in mind that I believe my audience to be those of us who have to, or once had to work for a living and that few of us are likely to inherit great wealth, then I offer this thesis: Generally speaking, we must not waste or squander whatever comfort and material success we have been gifted.
If I have to work for a living, and if there is a relationship between the time I work and the income I earn from that work, then it stands the reason that I must not waste what I have earned-for I will never again have the time back that it took to accomplish that earning. For instance, if I earn a paycheck or a commission and take the proceeds to a casino only to lose the entire amount, I can never again make that money.
Oh, I can tease myself into believing that I\'ll win the next time or that I can work some over time, but the simple truth is that I have been a bad steward of my gifts. Essentially, I am announcing to the universe that I do not appreciate my job or my work or the benefits I have been allowed to derive from my work
And I probable have deprived my family of something in the process.
Of greater importance-and cost-is the emotional price I will pay some part of each day whenever I cheat myself or cheat my family. I will lose sleep-or I will behave angrily to those close to me-or I will take foolish risks in an effort to compensate for my earlier foolishness.
Life is either too short-or too long, some may say-to squander our hard-won gains
Can there be any doubt that we MUST save a portion of every dollar we earn so that we can be deemed good stewards of our money and gifts? If we are disciplined savers, then there is considerable less risk to us and to our love ones if we then choose to take a recreational trip to the casino, If we lose what we can truly afford to lose, whether in recreation or riskier investing, then there will not be the same emotional cost related to our habit or our risk taking.
In the long term, over of our working lives, if we save compulsively-something like 10% of all we earn-then we will be able to retire on our own terms, certain in the belief that we have always lived within our means, unconcerned about the vagaries of SOCIAL SECURITY, able to care for those around us who may rely on us,and even able to give to those who have less than we do.
If we save from an early age, and if we invest just as we do our work-regularly and intelligently, regardless of what is going on in the world around us-then we WILL achieve financial independence
